It’s a big decision to pursue private pilot training. The next major step is choosing a flight school. Visit flight schools in your area and interview staff and customers. This checklist will help you choose the right place to learn to fly.

  1. Is the school FAA certified?
  2. Does the school operate new aircraft?
  3. Do the aircraft have new avionics?
  4. Is the staff happy to see you?
  5. Do the instructors answer your questions clearly?
  6. How does the school teach ground school?
  7. Does the school cover you on their aircraft insurance, or do you have to buy your own?
  8. What is the total cost of pilot training?
  9. Does the school offer financial assistance?
  10. What do present students think of the school?
  11. Would students recommend the school to friends and family?
  12. How difficult is it to schedule a lesson?
  13. Do they frequently cancel flight lessons due to mechanical reasons?
  14. Do all the avionics and instruments work on the training aircraft?
  15. How many aircraft are available to rent during your solo training and after you earn your certificate?
